MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging
The following MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan of the knee has been reproduced with the kind permission of the patient. The three images shown here are part of a longer sequence showing a tear in the meniscus caused by a cycling accident. This damage was subsequently repaired with surgery.

Medical Legal Art is used to support information dissemination in the court room for criminal and civil proceedings. Medical Legal illustrations, such as enhanced MRI scan images allow judges and juries to understand complex medical information more clearly in order to make an informed decision on the legal case being heard. Medical legal illustrations should be used as a supplement, not a replacement, for medical reports by clinicians and expert witnesses. The skeletal system is a complex area to illustrate. Medical illustrations are however preferable to photography or radiology because it can help to clarify the skeleton construction, providing clear and concise illustration to act as teaching material. In comparison X-Rays and MRI scans can only be produced in monotone. MRI scans are often provided as patient reference and a medical ilustrator will add colour to highlight the anatomy.
