Facts About The Skin
The skin is the largest organ of the human body and acts as a natural protective covering. After having illustrated a number of medical projects relating to skin, I realise what a fascinating and hugely complex organ it is. Made up of specific cells and tissues, it is made up of about 70% water, 25% protein and 2% lipids. The remainder includes trace minerals, nucleic acids, glycosoaminoglycans, proteoglycans and numerous other chemicals. By acting as a protective barrier from UV radiation and extremes of temperature, it also contains sensory perception, controls the loss of fluids and acts as a thermoregulator. Consisting of layers, epidermis, dermis and the fatty subcutaneous layer called adipose tissue, the skin continuously is shedding its outer layers, being replaced by the cells of the inner layers. It also varies in thickness due to sex, anatomimical location, individuals, and age.
