The cardiovascular system refers to the heart, as well as the blood vessels and the blood. For example, the pumping heart is responsible for getting the constant supply of oxygen the human body needs, around the blood vessels to the tissues that need it. As air is breathed in through the mouth and nose, it travels to the lungs, where Oxygen from the air is absorbed into the bloodstream. The heart then pumps oxygen-rich 'oxygenated' blood through a network of blood vessels - the arteries - to tissues including organs, muscles and nerves. The heart continues to pump the now used or 'de-oxygenated' bloodback back to the lungs, where fresh oxygen is absorbed, & the cycle starts once again.
Cardiology is the branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the heart and blood vessels. The field is commonly divided in the branches of coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology.
Joanna, as a trained medical illustrator in anatomy as well as art, can use her skills to illustrate all of these areas, working with surgeons and medical experts. You can Contact Joanna here.
