Endometriosis Illustrations
Endometriosis from endo, "inside", and metra, "womb" is a gynecological medical condition in women.
Endometrial-like cells appear and flourish in areas outside the uterine cavity, most commonly on the ovaries. The illustrations below demonstrate how the endometriosis appear on the surface of the uterus, and the ovaries. Plus the uterine cavity can become lined by endometrial cells, which are under the influence of female hormones. These endometrial-like cells appear in areas outside the uterus influenced by hormonal changes and respond in a way that is similar to the cells found inside the uterus. Symptoms will worsen with the menstrual cycle.
Symptoms of endometriosis are pain from cramps much like period pain, including painful or heavy periods, pain during intercourse, pelvic pain, infertility and low backache. In some cases the condition may not even be noticeable, or so severe that it can cause infertility.
Causes are not fully known but it may be from an immune dysfunction where endometriosis develops in women unable to fight off the endometriosis cells. Hereditary factors play a role. It is well recognized that female relations with endometriosis are at higher risk of developing endometriosis as well.
