Conditions and Diseases of the Heart
Here we have classified some of our illustrations by the specific heart disease or medical condition that they relate to. The following sections covers just some of the illustrations that we can create, relating to heart disease.
What is heart disease - Heart disease is the overall term to describe a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions that affect one or more of the components of the heart. Diseases that may affect the heart can vary from functional to structural damage, where the heart itself has become damaged or its blood supply to the heart has been restricted. Disease and damage caused by disease may also affect its ability to pump blood around the body. If blood supply is affected, then of course this has a knock on effect to the rest of the body, particulary the blood vessels and the kidneys.
Heart anatomy - The heart is a muscular organ located in the centre of the chest cavity and surrounded by a fluid filled sac called the pericardium. The heart produces electrical impulses that cause the heart to contract, pumping blood non stop around our body beating as many as 100,000 times a day, with the adult human heart pumping about 30 litres of blood each minute, which is approximately 2,000 gallons of blood each day. The blood that the heart moves carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body and transports carbon dioxide and other wastes to the lungs, kidneys and liver for removal. The heart is supplied through a set of coronary arteries and veins. These coronary arteries and veins can also be prone to disease, through a very fatty diet for example and they become blocked and restricts the flow of blood.
