Psoriasis Illustrations
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease of the skin. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. The skin usually sheds old cells replacing them with new in a cycle that takes about 28 days. In psoriais the whole process occurs at a much higher rate, about 3 to 6 days. With areas affected in this manner, the skins cells do nto have time to mature and forms thick patches called plaques. The build up of white blood cells produced by the body also causes accumilates causing the inflammation.
Plaque psoriasis - the most common form, depicted in the medical illustrations below, is commonly seen as red and white hues of scaly patches on the top of the epidermis. At its most severe it is characterised by well demarcated red patches with white thick scales and cracks in the skin. Its itchy, tight and produces a dandfuff like appearance as flakes disintegrate in the hair.
Guttate psoriasis - tending to appear in younger adults guttate psoriasis appears as small circular red patches of skin that are inflammed and can appear randomly over the whole body.
Pustular psoriasis - This is a more rare condition in which pustules can develop anywhere over the body. It is a severe condition and the blisters are noninfectious but filled with pus, surrounded by red skin.
Flexural psoriasis - Affecting just the folds of the skin, such as under the arms or groin, the moist nature of the skin folds makes the appearance of this form of psoriasis slightly different. It tends not to have silvery scale, and appears as smooth bright red patches with shiny skin.
