Orthopaedic Medical Illustrations

The team at Medical artist.com complete medical illustrations working within the specialised medical area of orthopaedics. An area that focuses on injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system provides form, support, stability, and movement to the body. It is made up of the bones of the skeleton, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other connective tissue that supports and binds tissues and organs together. This complex system is treated by specialist surgeon’s that includes anatomy, disease and injury to bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

Orthopaedic Anatomy

Orthopaedic anatomy is an area involved in the treatment of injuries, disease and conditions relating to the skeleton system and the associated joints, muscles and ligaments. This includes bones and joints and their associated structures that enable movement, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

Orthopaedic Surgery

Trauma and orthopaedic surgeons diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions of the musculoskeletal system. It is where the orthopaedic surgeon treats many musculoskeletal conditions with surgery. The surgeon also can treat patients sometimes without surgery, by using medication, exercise and other rehabilitative or alternative therapies.

This is because for most orthopaedic diseases and injuries there is more than one form of surgical treatment. These various forms of treatment have been illustrated and shown in the gallery below.

Examples of Orthopaedic Medical Illustrations

Arthroscopy Surgery in Orthopaedic Surgery

Arthroscopy surgery or key hole surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Its a procedure carried out on a joint in order  to either examine or treat damage inside the joint. It is performed using an instrument called an arthroscope. The endoscope is inserted into the joint through a small incision and is a procedure used to treat knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips.

When diagnosing a problem orthopaedic surgeons will use arthroscopy as its used to visualise, diagnose and treat problems inside a joint because the instrument contains a tiny video camera that magnifies the area by up to 30 times its normal size, allowing the surgeon to see inside the joint.
