Breast Surgery Illustrations

Breast surgery and breast reconstruction can be for cosmetic reasons, however, more often than not its purpose is to re build the breast after surgery due to illness. Types of typical surgery for example are breast reduction, augmentation, mammoplasty, mastopexy, lumpectomy and mastectomy. Our most recent project being show cased in this gallery was the completion of medical artwork covering the mastectomy surgcial procedures intended for patient education materials. It is the surgical removal of one or both of the breasts partially or completely. There are up to five variations of mastectomy depending on the individual case. Usually due to breast cancer, the mastectomy procedure is based on various factors including breast size, biologic aggressiveness of a breast cancer, the number of lesions, the availability of adjuvant radiation. The three types of masectomy therefore that we illustrated were Total, Radical and Modified Radical Mastectomy. Our aim here was to include complex and detailed anatomy wihin the patient education materials so that patients had the opportunity to understand in great detail the facts that are involved with their surgical procedures. Sometimes simple anatomical art or diagrams are just not enough, its needs a feeling of knowledge and depth of anatomy. Anatomical Facts Concerning Breast Surgery

The female breast anatomy lies over the 2nd to 6th rib, resting on the pectoralis major muscle and one third over the serratus anterior, and medial edges of the breast overlap the rectus sheath. The breast is not attached to the muscle itself, but attached by strong ligaments within the breast tissue called the Ligaments of Cooper. These are fibrous septa running through the subcutaneous tissue to the fascia of the chest wall. The breast tissue is made up of fat, fIbrous tissue and glandular tissue with a nipple that is surrounded by pigmented areola.
