Medical Anatomical Illustrations of the Human Brain

This gallery of medical illustrations describes the healthy anatomy of the human brain as well as the creation of illustration examples about the meninges anatomy. The varying layering of the meninges occurs within the spine its function to protect the central nervous system. The medical artworks also visually describe pathology conditions such as bleeds to the brain known as stroke, as well as cerebral aneurysms, diseased arteries such as the carotid artery.

Anatomical Facts about the Connective Tissue called the Meninges

The meninges is the system of connective tissue membranes that envelope the central nervous system and is made up of three layers of the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater. The primary function of the meninges and of the cerebrospinal fluid is to protect the central nervous system.

The arachnoid mater is a thin membrane enveloping the brain and medulla spinalis and lying between the pia mater internally and the dura mater externally; it is separated from the pia mater by the subarachnoid cavity, which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.

The dura mater is a white fibrous tissue made up of elastic fibers arranged in flattened laminae which are imperfectly separated by lacunar spaces and blood vessels into two layers, endosteal and meningeal.

The pia mater (spine) is thicker, firmer, and less vascular than the cranial pia mater (cranial) due to the fact that it consists of two layers, the outer or additional one being composed of bundles of connective-tissue fibers, and between the layers are cleft-like spaces. The forming of the cauda equina is created by a longitudinal fibrous band, called the linea splendens, that extends along the middle line of the anterior surface of the pia mater and a similar band, the ligamentum denticulatum situated on either side. Below the conus medullaris, the pia mater is continued as a long, slender filament (filum terminale), which descends through the center of the mass of nerves forming the cauda equina.
