Overview

Pocket Anatomy and Physiology integrates structure and function at both the macroscopic and microscopic level, allowing the reader to see the connection between detailed anatomy and function.

We provided medical illustrations of human anatomy for the book combining clear illustrations of body regions, organs, cells and physiological events with succinct but informative text that explains the function of the relevant system and structure. Common diseases (obesity, diabetes mellitus, coeliac disease, autoimmune disease) have been used to illustrate principles of normal body function, as well as dysfunction in disease.

Project Brief

Commissioned by Quarto publishing Medical-Artist.com were tasked with illustrating over 100 illustrations for Pocket Anatomy & Physiology and a second title Pocket Anatomy of the Moving Body. The brief was to complete medical illustrations not only as anatomically accurate but in a realism style to show the detail within each anatomy illustration. Working with the author Kenneth Ashwell we supplied pencil drafts of the illustrations in order to capture any feedback which we could incorporate onto the colour versions.  The approved sketches were used as the basis for the colour work. We used the digital medium to complete as colour work as well as completing some of the illustrations in watercolour, producing all of the work in a realism style.

The Result

The result was that we contributed to a great guide book on anatomy and physiology that was pocket sized but packed full of medical illustrations and anatomical facts and learning aids.
