Overview

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is one of the oldest surgical organisations in the world and traces its origins to 1505 when the Barber Surgeons of Edinburgh were formally incorporated as a Craft Guild of Edinburgh. It’s an organisation dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and advancement in surgical practice, through its interest in education, training and examinations, its liaison with external medical bodies and representation of the modern surgical workforce.

Brief

Medical-artist.com were commissioned by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to complete illustrations for their eLearning system. An eLearning system is electronic learning, and typically this means the user using a computer to access the course or as part of a mandatory anatomy training course or a full distance learning course.

From the start it was important for us to gather the correct parameters of the eLearning system so that we could provide the illustrations in a ready format so they would be suitable for the systems interface. We needed to complete a number of medical illustrations and the medical content was to show diseases of the rectum and altered bowel habit and the surgical techniques used to correct the disease.

The Result

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh supplied base reference material of example sketches and notes to explain what was required for each illustration. For convenience this was in the form of a PowerPoint document and we were to be advised when necessary on the content and context of the illustrations to assist in the completion of the work. The result was the completion of highly detailed medical illustrations covering bowel anatomy and disease.
